Leave Ajar started with a small observation: most loneliness isn't solved by an algorithm. It's solved by a chair, a room, and the quiet permission to sit down.

So we built a network of welcoming spaces — cafés, libraries, pubs, community centres, hospital atriums, churches, supermarkets — and asked each one for the same small thing: mark one seat. One table or chair, with a small, beautiful sign that says: sit here if you're open to company. You are welcome.

That's the entire product. No app inside the venue. No phone. No technology at all once you're there.

Who we invite

Leave Ajar does not invite lonely people. It invites kind people. The whole system depends on it.

A confident, warm person who happens to be sitting alone sees the Leave Ajar seat and thinks: I'll sit there — maybe I'll make someone's day. A lonely person walks in, sees someone in the Leave Ajar seat, and feels safe to join them. The kind person removed the barrier. The lonely person never had to identify themselves as lonely.

We also believe that one of the quietest consequences of the past decade is the number of people who simply do not go out.

Not because they cannot. Because going out alone — with no one to meet and nothing to anchor the visit — does not feel worth the effort. The phone at home is easier. The sofa is safer. And so the world gets a little smaller, one stayed-in evening at a time.

A Leave Ajar space gives those people a reason to leave the house. Not a programme to sign up for. Not a group to join. Just the knowledge that a welcoming seat exists, and that sitting in it is enough.

We're starting small and on purpose. Every venue is reviewed by a human. Every map pin is somewhere we'd happily sit ourselves.
